Women Veterans Transition House
Women’s VTH Director: Margaret A. Guzman
According
to Veterans Administration and Federal Census 2000 data,
over 28,295 women veterans were residing in the Commonwealth
of Massachusetts. Historically, however, this segment of the
veteran population has been under-served. Women veterans do
not have adequate facilities in place to respond to their
needs.
Recognizing this, the Board of Directors authorized the
application for funding through the Veterans Administration
and the Commonwealth with the assistance of both U.S.
Representative Barney Frank and Mass. State Senator Mark
Montigny. Through these funds the board acquired a former
residential property at 98 Arnold St., New Bedford, MA which
has been converted into a 10-bed facility for low to
moderate-income, homeless or at risk female veterans.
The mission of the Women Veterans Transition House is, first
and foremost, to treat women veterans with dignity and
respect while providing them with a safe place to call home
as they deal with the issues that contributed to their state
of homelessness.
The Women Veterans Transition House target population is
homeless, and at risk of homelessness, low to
moderate-income female veterans who are willing to address
their issues and problems that lead to their homeless by
moving from that state through the Women Veterans House
Program and transitioning to successful independent living
within the community in mainstream, permanent housing.
The WVTH provides a safe, supportive, substance-free and
therapeutic environment promoting all aspects of addressing
the root causes of homelessness.
To achieve this, the WVTH provides:
* Case Management
* Individual Counseling focusing on service planning,
developing goals and family reunification.
* Residents in need of physical and mental care, legal
assistance, residential treatment, vocational and
educational needs are referred to appropriate agencies
within the City of New Bedford’s Continuum of Care.
* Housing Search services are available from a registered
Housing Advocate with HousingWorks, Inc.
In-House groups are provided and cover the following topics:
Anger Management, Relapse Prevention, Life Skills, Art as
Therapy, HIV-AIDS Awareness, Domestic Violence, And other

lifestyle that is conducive to maintaining successful
