With heavy hearts, we at Veterans Transition House (VTH) mourn the loss of a dedicated friend, respected leader, and tireless advocate — John W. Remedis known throughout the community as “Johnny Angel”.
John served our mission with honor and passion: John previously served as President and was serving as Vice President of our Board of Directors this year. He helped guide VTH’s mission to provide safe, supportive housing and wrap-around services to homeless and at-risk veterans.
His commitment extended far beyond VTH — John was deeply woven into the fabric of his community and beyond:
- Member, Board of Directors of V.F.W. Freetown Post #6643
- Member of Town of Freetown’s Parade & Fireworks Committee, Cultural Council (as President), Emergency Management Agency, and Memorial Park Committee — all demonstrating his love for and service to his town.
- President of Welcome Home Veterans’ Housing (Sean Brooke House)
- Served on four separate Vietnam Moving Wall Committees (in Dartmouth, Plymouth, Middleborough, and Fairhaven), honoring the legacy of his fellow veterans.
John was a decorated veteran who served in the 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam. He was a Purple Heart recipient and earned the Silver Star — the latter awarded for extraordinary bravery when he saved lives under enemy fire.
His life embodied service — at VTH, in his town, and across the veteran community. He never sought praise; he simply acted, always ready to offer a “hand up, not a handout,” and to stand by those in need.
We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Linda, his family, friends, and all who loved him. His legacy of compassion, dedication, and community service will continue to guide and inspire the work of Veterans Transition House.
May we honor John’s memory by continuing the work he believed in — helping our veterans find stability, dignity, and a place to call home.
